Yama is one of my favorite local sushi spots. I visit quite frequently, and the Groupon/Living Social deals make it such a great deal! The restaurant itself is a nice environment, it is quiet and clean, and you can always get a table. Try the Godzilla roll, it is my favorite. The only reason I rate it 3 stars is due to the unfriendly server that seems to serve us every time we visit. Restaurant is BYOB.

Barely a 3. Sushi was extremely mediocre. Just a cut above grocery store quality. Service was okay, considering there was only one server for the whole restaurant. I was glad to find they have a beer and liquor license. It's nice that they often include a complementary roll. No real crab meat at this restaurant - crab stick only. I'd recommend Sushi Hana on Falls Rd for 4-star sushi and San Sushi Too in Towson for 5-star.

The sushi didn't seem all that great. I feel that I've had better pretty much everywhere else I've gotten sushi ( save for the grocery store ). Service was decent, but that may have been partially due to the restaurant being nearly empty. Not sure I'd recommend this place to a friend.

I remember what I believe was my first experience with this place. Essentially I was the only one there during the lunch hour and when my food came out it was the wrong order. Not sure how this happens and I can't remember if carry out orders were the issue or not but I ate the entre anyway. Actually it was pretty good and that's the thing with this place: the sushi is actually served up pretty damn well. For instance, on a recent visit, the salmon was just the way I like it: seaweed wrap on the outer parameter followed by the rice and then sushi. Matter of fact all the raw fish sushi was well made, served at right temperature (not too hot or cold), good texture and tasted great. The tamago was just right: appropriate temperature (not too hot or cold) with no weird burn marks, uneven texture, and taste just right. I find it amazing how hard it is to find good tamago but this is one of the few places that I can honestly say gets it right. The place has a pretty good interior design as well. It sometimes has a minor flaw here or there as noted above or for instance what appears to be staff leaving out personal items on the sushi bar area as was the case recently. Also no beer is served which is somewhat of an inconvenience for myself as I enjoy appropriate Japanese beer of preference with my sushi. However you can always BYOB. Other plus would be the place boasts some of the more reasonable sushi prices around. But ultimately its the quality of what they produce that makes them worth a visit. Easily be 5 stars if it wasn't for some of those little flaws.

Main dishes are way overpriced. Service was slow and unfriendly. Sushi was okay. The Pad Thai was totally gross--didn't even resemble the dish in terms of ingredients or sauce. Husband got the hibachi chicken fried rice which was cooked to death and had no flavor at all. Such a shame.

We Went about lunchtime. My friend and I were the only two in the restaurant. It took 10 minutes to get our drink order taken, once we ordered and the food did come. I had to get up 5 times to either ask for a refill, napkins, or finally the check. Will not be back.

Sushi is just okay, nothing special. They use way too much rice on their maki and nigiri. What is special is they charge extra money to add cucumbers to their Yellowtail Roll. $1 per roll, to be exact. Since you can likely make ~200 Yellowtail Rolls with a single cucumber that costs less than a dollar, I'd say that's a pretty hefty profit margin they're hauling in there. Whatever the case, adding $3 to my ~$40 order to add something which comes standard on every other Japanese restaurant's Yellowtail Roll, cost this nickel-and diming restaurant a long-term patron as a customer.

My most recent visit was very disappointing after a long pause. I've been a number of times and in the past, we've ordered basic dishes and been pretty happy with the product and the price. This time, maybe the quality was down, or our expectations raised, I'm not sure...some things didn't seem fresh. Not the fish, because we didn't get sick, but the tempura flakes used for "crunchy" rolls. The rice didn't seem to be sushi quality, the fish wasn't flavorful. It was just very mediocre. Whereas I would have recommended this place in the past, now I wouldn't - if you want sushi, go out of your way and go to Minato or something. If you're more interested in convenience and this is the closest place, just keep your order very basic - salmon or tuna rolls, nothing with slower turnover or more than 3 ingredients. The miso soup is right out of an instant kit, too. Seriously, you could make a better sushi meal yourself for cheaper by making a trip to H-Mart. However, it's not like it's actively bad...though the televisions do detract from what atmosphere they're trying for. I'm rounding up to 3 stars due to some good experiences in the past but it really didn't measure up to my memory (which wasn't of a stand-out place, just a good value).

I had low expectations because they had a Living Social deal, but this stripmall sushi place really surprised me! The fish was fresh and delicious - we got a yellowtail roll, spicy tuna with mango, and alaska (salmon and avocado). Each was better than the last. Our edemame was also good. The decoration was about what you'd expect for the space, and it seems to be a family-run business. Prices are very reasonable for such good sushi. I'll definitely be going back, and don't need another deal to do so!

The sushi is actually really tasty and they have a nice assortment. It reminds me of sushi from The Orient but better. The atmosphere leaves alot to be desired. The carpet is dingy and bleh. I do agree the tv is distracting especially because it kept catching my eye but my dinner partner could not see, so it just became an annoyance. And the reason why I rate this place so low is the waitress was chomping on her gum the entire time she served us! First, that is a huge pet peeve of mine. Second, I find it disgusting and unsanitary to be served food with somebody openly chewing gum to the point I could smell the mint and hear that annoying sound. I thought that was a big server no-no and I would make a return visit if it was not for this.

After having sushi here, no other sushi place can compare. Service is a little slow. Even though the place is never crowded. This means no wait and come with plenty of time to sit and enjoy your food and company. Or we always prefer delivery. Portions/sizes are always the best (big rolls) and everything always tastes fresh. Menu has a huge variety but Doesn't serve alcohol. Pearl river is my favorite.

It seems like more people order their food to go rather than eat here. In my experience, the server wasn't very friendly and the food wasn't that good. I ordered tempura vegetables and two rolls of sushi. The tempura vegetables were cooked perfectly but were cut too large, especially the broccoli. The sauce was very light, probably too watery. I didn't like the sushi at all. I don't remember which ones I ordered (they have so many choices!). The baked roll tasted like it had BBQ sauce on it. The tempura shrimp with mango had a cold seafood salad with mango sauce on it - the flavors didn't mix well so I picked those rolls apart and only ate the tempura shrimp & mangos inside. I couldn't finish the other roll either.

Service here can be excruciatingly slow so be sure to allow ample time if dining in. If you live where they deliver, note that they have a $2 delivery charge. The chicken pad thai is delicious, this is the only place around that I like pad thai; it is usually way too sweet for me. The sushi here rocks, it is so fresh! My personal faves of the ones that we always get are the Pearl River, the Shrimp Tempura and the Spicy Tuna. Soft drinks here come in a can. If going on the food alone this place would be 4/4.5 stars but you have to lose points when customers have to go to the counter to ask for their check and carryout boxes when there are only two tables in the whole restaurant.

Sushi was very delicious. My husband and I decided to get a variety of different sushi rolls and they not only looked fresh, but tasted so fresh and good. I would order sushi here over Chopstix any day. I am very pleased with Yama Sushi and I hope they stay around for a very long time!!

Sushi is the best in the area. Always fresh and more offerings then anyone. Dining room is never crowded. I feel they are a bit pricey for the area and we don't like the fact that they charge for delivery and every little thing/change. Always our first choice for sushi if we are staying close to home.

This is my number 1 sushi joint. Angry dragon roll is awesome. Dumplings are great as well as green salad with ginger dressing. It's quiet and byob. Great hideaway place and not too busy like chopsticks. Great hibachi steak and scallops never been disappointed.

Sushi is delicious, service is awful. I've been here numerous times, mostly because of their coupons in Val Pak, but their is never anyone is there! Maybe one or two other tables, tops. Which works for me since I have a two year old and dinning out can be hard. At least this way I don't feel like I'm ruining someone else's meal! The sign says they open at 11:00, but we came at 11:15 once and they weren't open. Tried calling, and it just rang and rang. All in all, I go back. It's cheap, sushi is good, it's quiet, I can bring my kid. I can deal with a less than friendly waitress!

It's quite good (except a dish that I don't remember, its taste is a little bit strange - my friends like it -- There are a lot of sushi dishes at this place, next time we will try some more. When choosing a sushi spot, my wife always chooses Yama -- a family-run business. The sushi rolls are always well-made, fresh, and tasty. The restaurant is always clean, with friendly service. There is a nice selection of options, easy parking, and a laid-back atmosphere. My favorite is the wonton soup, which is the best in the area. They use just a touch of ginger, which is delicious. We have lived in the area for 7 years, and enjoy the food from this restaurant around once every 2 weeks. The prices are very reasonable for what you get.

Pretty solid sushi option, especially when compared to the disaster across the street. Wasn't thrilled with the ginger dressing for the salad, but it worked pretty well for my appetizer sonomono. I found this place because of Groupon. I'm kinda surprised I never noticed it while passing. But, thanks to Groupon, I have another solid sushi choice in the area.

There was a Living Social deal for Yama Sushi, which is about 6 miles from my house, so my boyfriend and I decided to check it out. We tried to find out in advance whether or not the establishment had a liquor license, but it is not mentioned on their website. Following what turned out to be false information on a third-party website, we did not bring wine with us, only to find out upon our arrival at 6 pm on a Saturday evening that it is a BYOB place. (There is a liquor store in the same strip mall.) Before we had even sat down all the way, the waitress asked for our drink orders. I ordered iced tea and my boyfriend ordered water. The waitress brought our drinks quickly. We had less than thirty seconds to peruse the substantial menu before she asked us if we were ready to order food. The place was empty except for one other table so I am not sure why the waitress was rushing us so much. It was difficult to concentrate on the menu because there were two televisions blaring CNN. Very strange choice for a sushi restaurant, and extremely disconcerting to have a news story about Guantanamo prison playing while we're trying to enjoy dinner. As I mentioned, the menu is large and has a good variety of maki. The nigiri offerings were standard -- nothing unusual in this suburban joint, which wasn't surprising. The menu is checklist-style. We chose seaweed salad, which was listed under appetizers, and several rolls. My iced tea tasted "off." It was unsweetened, which I expected (and there was no sugar or other sweetener on our table) but had a strong taste of something fishy. (And later on the receipt, I saw that the iced tea, which we were charged for even though I sent it back, was called "sweet tea.") The other table of customers left after their meal ended and my boyfriend and I were the only customers in the restaurant. I believe one person came in to pick up a carryout order. About 15 minutes passed and we were trying hard to ignore the blaring television, but it was impossible. During this time, we decided that the atmosphere was so unpleasant that we would rather just eat a few bites and get the rest of our food to go. The waitress brought our sushi on one large platter, as is common in sushi places. That was fine with us. We were pleasantly surprised that the sushi looked and tasted good. A mango roll was reminiscent of the Thai dessert mango with sticky rice. The orange flamingo roll was also particularly delicious. Everything seemed fresh and was prepared with care. Unfortunately, our service continued to be dismal. We were not given small plates to eat our sushi, and instead we had to hover over the large platter until I asked for individual plates. We had never been brought our seaweed salad appetizer before the meal, and we had to ask for that, too. No apologies were ever made for any of these service mistakes, by the way. After a few minutes of eating, music was suddenly turned on. But the televisions also remained on, so there was an annoying clash of sounds. We couldn't stand to be there anymore, so we took most of our food to go and enjoyed it at home. If I lived closer to Yama I might consider getting takeout food from them, but I will never eat there again, unless I hear that they've done a substantial reworking of their service. I can make concessions for forgotten food items when a place is jam-packed, but we were literally the only customers most of the time we were there. And the televisions are a total deal-breaker, too. In a city with tons of sushi choices, Yama is going to have to shape up quickly.

Stopped by for some takeout sushi. I didn't get a chance to try out too many items on the menu because I was in a rush. I ordered the tuna roll and seafood miso soup. Both of which came out really nice. Service was prompt but was lacking a little personal touch. No biggie though, the food made up for it. I was just ordering takeout anyways.

Yama is one of my favorite local sushi spots. I visit quite frequently, and the Groupon/Living Social deals make it such a great deal! The restaurant itself is a nice environment, it is quiet and clean, and you can always get a table. Try the Godzilla roll, it is my favorite.
